Recap: Oregon football defeats Boise State thanks to a last-second field goal


Eugene, Oregon — — As time ran out on Saturday night, No. 7 Oregon defeated tenacious Boise State 37-34 thanks to a 25-yard field goal made by Atticus Sappington.
For the Ducks (2-0), who had trouble against the Broncos, Dillon Gabriel passed for 243 yards and two touchdowns. The Ducks’ nonconference home victory streak now stands at 34 games, which is the longest among active teams in the country.
Boise State, which led 20-14 at the half but lost steam when Oregon scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to take a lead, was led by Ashton Jeanty, who ran for 192 yards and three scores.

After Jeanty’s 8-yard scoring run gave the Broncos(1-2) a 34-27 lead early in the fourth quarter, Noah Whittington returned the kickoff 99 yards, setting up Jayden Limar’s 16-second touchdown catch in the end zone.
Jonah Dalmas’ field goal in the opening quarter gave Boise State the early advantage. While Oregon’s offense faltered early on, Gabriel found Evan Stewart for a 67-yard throw before adding a touchdown on a keeper.
In the second quarter, Oregon led 14–10 when Jeanty scored on a 3-yard run by running. Dillon then connected with Stewart on a 34-yard throw to seal the victory.

Prior to the season, the Ducks were ranked No. 3 in the AP Top 25, but they fell to No. 7 following a lackluster 24-14 victory against Idaho in the season’s opening game.
Against Boise State, it seemed that the offensive line problems for the Ducks persisted. In the first half alone, Gabriel was sacked four times, once during Oregon’s first series. Throughout the game, the line was moved around a few times.

Atticus Sappington scored a 37-34 victory for Oregon on Saturday night in Autzen Stadium with a 25-yard field goal with one second remaining.

With 9:59 remaining in the fourth quarter, Noah Whittington gave the Ducks a boost with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. In an attempt to determine whether Whittington lost the ball right before crossing the goal line, the play was reviewed, but the call was upheld.

With 10:15 remaining, Ashton Jeanty’s 8-yard run put Boise State ahead. The Broncos took advantage of another Oregon error, and now in only 53 seconds, they had scored 14 points off of two Ducks’ mistakes.

With 12:16 remaining, Boise State recovered at the Ducks’ 22-yard line after Dillon Gabriel fumbled on a quarterback run.

Boise State scores a touchdown straight away after an Oregon turnover. With 13:09 remaining, the Broncos recovered a fumble by Ducks tight end Patrick at their own thirty and on their opening offensive play, Ashton Jeanty raced 70 yards for the game-tying touchdown.

With 3:57 remaining in the third quarter, the Ducks led 27-20 thanks to a wide receiver touchdown on an 85-yard punt return. The player raced unimpeded from one sideline to the other and into the goal zone.
It was Oregon’s first punt return for a touchdown since 2018.

Targeting call results in Boise State’s dismissal

At the 11:00 point in the third quarter, Boise State safety Alexander Teubner was dismissed for targeting after hitting Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel in the helmet while he was falling to complete a 2-yard run.
